- The total cost of constructing the Tower Bridge was £1,184,000, which is equivalent to £100 million as of 2013! (Which is equivalent to 4 million meals at Tower Tandoori)
- Bermondsey was host to London’s first passenger railway terminus in 1836, from Spa Road, as part of the London Bridge to Greenwich line.
- St Mary Magdalen is a Grade II listed parish church and is the oldest building in Bermondsey. The interesting tombstones include the Rolls family (of Rolls Royce), and the Gaitskells who are in this church.
- Bermondsey was once a major centre of industry hosting large scale industries such as: shipbuilding, engineering, carriage, shipping and food-processing industries. It had Europe’s largest leather industry, the largest hatters and largest brewer in the world. It was the home to many household brand names such as: Jacobs Cream Crackers, Cross and Blackwell, Hartley’s Jam, Courage Beer, Sarsens Vinegar, Pearce Duff, Spiller’s dog biscuits and Peak Frean Biscuits. Hartley’s Jams established a factory on Rothsay Street in 1902 and employed over 2,000 people.
